Part 1 — Demonstrativos (Demonstratives)
Portuguese has a three-level demonstrative system — distance from speaker and listener matters.
With nouns (this / that / that over there)

Grammar focus — demonstratives + superlative
Demonstratives show distance. Superlatives show the extreme in a group.

São Paulo speech — flexible use
In everyday conversation, Brazilians often use esse/essa and isso for almost everything:
- Isso aqui = this here
- Isso aí = that there (near you)
- Aquilo ali = that over there

Part 2 — Superlativo (Superlatives)
o mais / o menos + adjective

Agreement: muito + masculine; muita + feminine; muitos/muitas + plural.

- Este/esse/aquele + noun = three distances

Pronunciation (2 min)
esse vs este — regional variation
In much of Sul and Sudeste (including SP), speakers distinguish:
- es-te (this, near me) — clearer e
- es-se (that, near you) — slightly different vowel
In many regions, the distinction blurs and esse/isso dominate. Practice both forms; understand the system even if locals mix them.
Stress in demonstratives
- es-TE / es-SE / a-QUE-le — paroxítona stress on es- and -que-
- a-QUIL-o — oxítona on -lo
