Tip: Every “Fulano me disse que…” is reported speech. Master it and you can relay any message.

Brazilian speech: falar que is extremely common, even when grammar books prefer dizer que.

When the introductory verb is in the past, the verb inside the reported clause often shifts back.

Brazilian preference: pedir para / pra + infinitivo is more natural in speech than pedir que + subjunctive.

In fast speech, que before a vowel can sound like “ki”: disse que ia → /dʒis ki ia/
Don’t drop que in writing — but expect to hear it lightly.

Tell a 2-minute story with minimum 5 disse que / perguntou se / pediu para. Partner reacts with Sério? / E aí? / Nossa!
Activity 3 — Bureaucracy relay (8 min)
Role-play: one person “calls” the cartório and gets information. The other relays to a friend who needs the same document.
Activity 4 — He said / She said (8 min)
Gossip format (light and fun): relay what three “people” said about a fictional weekend plan. Use falou que, comentou que, avisou que.
Activity 5 — Travel disaster (10 min)
Report a chain: hotel → taxi driver → airline agent. Each person said something different. Listener summarizes all messages.

- Transformations: Convert 10 direct sentences to indirect (mix of statements, questions, requests).
- Relay dialogue: Write a dialogue (14 lines) where Alex relays three messages from the landlord to Marina.
- Anecdote: Write a travel or work anecdote (10–12 sentences) with at least 6 reporting verbs.
- Table: Create your own mini transformation table with 5 examples from your life.
- Translate to Portuguese: She said she was going to call back. He asked if we had received the contract. The receptionist asked me to show proof of payment. They told us the meeting was at three, not two. Know what he said? That he had already sent the email!

- Relay practice: Listen to a short news clip or friend story. Retell using disse que / afirmou que.
- Phone relay: Practice relaying a 3-part message without forgetting details.
