When you’re new in São Paulo, you’ll ask for directions constantly — on the street, at the metrô, in a building.

Se impersonal — how does one get there?
In Brazilian Portuguese, people often use se + verb for general “how do you get there” questions — no specific subject.

Imperative commands — natural Brazilian style
In directions, Brazilians use short commands. These are the forms you’ll hear most:

In Lecture 13 you saw Pode trazer a conta? In directions and transport, object pronouns appear naturally — but Brazilians often keep the full noun in A1 speech.

Many Paulistanos use Waze for driving and Google Maps for walking and metro. For metrô, Google Maps often shows the best route with baldeação.

Ônibus Buses cover everywhere but routes are complex. At A1 level, ask: Esse ônibus vai pro centro? or use an app.
Bilhete único One card for metro, buses, and CPTM. Buy at station kiosks or use contactless where available.
Traffic — trânsito Paulistanos talk about traffic constantly: Tá muito trânsito! / Melhor ir de metrô. Waze is essential for drivers.
Walking in SP Sidewalks vary. At night, stay on well-lit main streets. Dá pra ir a pé? is a smart question.
