When you meet people in São Paulo — at work, in your prédio, at a festa — you’ll describe appearance naturally. Keep it polite and focus on neutral traits.

Part 2 — Personalidade (Personality)
Physical description is only half the story. Brazilians love talking about whether someone is gente boa (a good person).

Possessives show who something belongs to. They agree in gender and number with the thing owned — not with the owner.

In Brazil, seu/sua almost always means your (formal você), not “his/her.”

To say “his” or “her” clearly, Brazilians use dele (his) and dela (her):

Part 11 — Cultural note: família no Brasil
Family is central In Brazilian culture, family ties are strong. Sunday lunch with avós, tios, and primos is common. Don’t be surprised if a new friend calls you querido/querida — warmth is normal.
São Paulo specifics Many Paulistanos come from other cities or states. You’ll hear: Minha família é de Minas, mas eu moro aqui. The interior of São Paulo state has many weekend country houses (sítio/chácara).
Respect and terms
- Senhor/Senhora for older people you don’t know well
- Vovô/Vovó — affectionate for grandparents
- Titi — informal aunt/uncle (not universal, but heard)
Physical comments Brazilians may comment on appearance more freely than in some cultures (Nossa, que bonita!). Usually it’s meant as a compliment — but you can keep your descriptions neutral when learning.
