Brazilian tip: In conversation, Brazilians say a gente far more often than nós:

  • A gente mora em São Paulo. = We live in São Paulo.
  • Nós moramos em São Paulo. = Same meaning, more formal.

São Paulo tip: Use você everywhere for “you” (singular). You don’t need tu in SP.

When to use ser

Use ser for: nationality, profession, identity, origin.

Short answers:

  • Sim, eu sou. / Não, eu não sou.
  • Sim, ela é. / Não, ela não é.

  1. Write 6 sentences about yourself and two other people using sou, é, somos, são. Include nationality, profession or student status, and city of origin.
  2. Translate: I am Brazilian. She is from Argentina. We are friends. Are they students?

Oral

  1. Introduce yourself in 4 sentences: name, nationality, profession/student, city of origin. Use only ser for now.
  2. Practice with a partner: ask Você é de São Paulo? and answer sim/não with a short follow-up.

Optional challenge
