In Lecture 20 you expressed moral opinions with the subjunctive. Today we explore hypotheses and the conditional — what would happen if…?

Tip: Se eu fosse você… is one of the most useful phrases in Brazilian Portuguese. You’ll hear it daily.

Part 1 — Condicional simples — formação (Formation)

The conditional is formed by adding endings to the infinitive. It expresses what would happen under certain conditions.

Uses of the conditional

Part 2 — Hipóteses com Se + imperfeito do subjuntivo (Hypotheses)

Se eu fosse…, eu + condicional

This is the classic unreal/hypothetical pattern (present/future unreal).

Brazilian informal note

In casual speech, Brazilians sometimes use se eu fosse + vou (not conditional): Se eu fosse você, falo com ele. The conditional is preferred in class and formal contexts.

Part 4 — Futuro composto — introdução (Future perfect intro)

The futuro composto (futuro do indicativo + particípio) expresses an action that will have been completed by a future point.

Formation

Brazilian speech: Often replaced by vou ter + particípio or simple future: Até sexta vou ter terminado or Até sexta termino.

Part 5 — Pensar, lembrar, achar (Verbs of thought)

It would be interesting to research. The building I live in is from the 60s.

Se eu tivesse tempo, ouviria mais episódios. O apresentador diria qualquer coisa com convicção!

If I had time, I'd listen to more episodes. The host would say anything with conviction!
