Part 1 — Como conjugar verbos em -ar (How to conjugate -ar verbs)

Most Portuguese verbs end in -ar. To conjugate:

  1. Remove the ending -ar
  2. Add the endings for each person

Model verb: falar (to speak)

Pattern: The -ar ending changes; the stem fal- stays the same.

Note: Gostar de = to like (something). Preview only — we’ll study it more later:

  • Eu gosto de São Paulo. (I like São Paulo.)
  • Ela gosta de música. (She likes music.)

Irregular reminder: ir, ser, ter, fazer, querer do NOT follow the -ar pattern. Learn them separately.

To make a negative sentence, put não before the verb:

  • Eu pego o metrô = I take the metro
  • Eu saio de casa às… = I leave home at…
  • Eu chego às… = I arrive at…

Pronunciation (2 min)

-ar endings: In careful speech: falo, fala, falamos, falam. In fast speech, final -am is often very soft — eles falam sounds almost like eles fala~.

R in trabalhar: In many parts of Brazil, R at the start of a syllable sounds like /h/: trabalhartabalhar. In São Paulo you’ll hear both — don’t worry, people understand you.
