Paulista Path You ask Onde é o metrô? and your Brazilian friend gently corrects you: Onde está o metrô? Same words, different verb — and suddenly you sound like a textbook, not a Paulistano neighbor.
Ser and estar both mean “to be” in English. Brazilian Portuguese uses them in predictable patterns. This guide gives you the decision tree first, then SP-ready examples.
The 30-second rule

Ser — who, what, when
Ser describes what something is in a stable sense:
- Identity: Eu sou Alex. / Ela é médica.
- Origin: Sou de São Paulo. / É do Brasil.
- Time: É segunda-feira. / São duas horas.
- Material / type: A mesa é de madeira. / O prédio é antigo.
Estar — where and how (now)
Estar describes location and temporary states:
- Location: O metrô está na Paulista. / Cadê meu celular? Está na bolsa.
- Condition: A comida está quente. / O trânsito está horrível.
- Mood (often): Estou cansado. / Ela está feliz hoje.
Some adjectives change meaning with ser vs estar:

Common mistakes
- Onde é…? for location → use Onde está…? (or Cadê…?)
- Sou bem → Brazilians say Estou bem for “I’m fine”
- É cansado (permanent trait) vs Estou cansado (right now)
